Now that Annalisa's computer has a bridged Internet connection I can play with the live Linux CDs I burned while trying to troubleshoot her wireless problem. (Linux has trouble with wireless and the booting would hang when trying to get an IP address). A "live CD" has everything you need to start the operating system on boot, but makes no changes to the hard drive. I burned Knoppix, one of the first live CD distributions, and Ubuntu "Dapper Drake." I must say I was impressed with Ubuntu. Everything worked off the bat: sound, network card, display (and at the perfect resolution, too!). Even the startup sound is very peaceful ; ) It does take forever to GET started, though. Knoppix blows it out of the water here.
Here's a screenshot:

I didn't like the brown and tan theme Ubuntu used at first, but that's not bad. I was having a blast with Gnometris, which is the best Tetris clone I've played. This distribution has restored my love of Gnome over KDE. Gnome just seems more streamlined than KDE, and I just like the layout and feel better. If I had a PC now this is what I'd be running.
